LOS ANGELES—Calling it a necessary investment in the film’s future, producers of a $42,000 independent feature confirmed that $40,000 of its budget had been reserved for festival submission fees.

“We really believe in this story,” said the producer, who shot the film over one weekend and has spent the ensuing nine months resizing its poster. “We just need the right audience of six exhausted programmers to believe in it too.”

The remaining funds covered a camera rental, two sandwiches, and a sound recordist who was told the project would be a great opportunity to meet festivals.

At press time, the team was celebrating a personalized rejection email that used the film’s correct title.
