LOS ANGELES—Explaining that the opportunity was “honestly huge,” a local production assistant attempted to settle this month’s rent by offering his landlord a prominent position in the end credits.

“The director has a really strong festival strategy,” the tenant said, sliding a mood board across the table. “And if this goes, there could be a lot more rent down the line.”

The landlord declined a proposed deferred-payment arrangement, a producer credit, and a chance to network with the apartment’s other occupants.

At press time, the tenant was reconsidering a second project that promised meals but had not specified on which days.
