SANTA MONICA, CA — Amid the height of awards season campaigning, a leaked memo revealed Thursday that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sent a mass email to the Costume Designers Branch referring to acting nominees as “meat hangers.”
“We simply wanted to remind the guild that the real stars of the red carpet are the textiles,” the memo said. It went on to add that "without a skeleton to hold it up, most haute couture would just look like a pile of laundry. They're like meat hangers of the delicious fashion tastes," continues the leaked memo.
"Not to be reductionistic, but I think we all know that the nominees' primary purpose is to safely transport their gown past the paparazzi while looking good.”
When reached for an opportunity to respond to the leaked memo, the Academy declined to comment.
